History:The origins of the village date back to the end of the crusade against the cathars. The religious order (Canons) of Saint-Nazaire of Carcassonne received by donation from the pope the small village of Saint-Etienne-de Clamous that has been predominantly inhabited by the cathars .
The Canons then edified a powerfull castle, a vigilant sentry guarding the entrance to the clamoux valley.
Soon , houses where built standing at the foot of the castle, they formed a small market town surrounded by a defensive wall and large deep moats.
This primitive wall was enlarged probably in the XIII th century to include the new town or « Ville Neuve » which was then called Villeneuve - les - chanoines (Canons).
Since 1750, Villeneuve is a winegrowers village and grows some of the best minervois wines. Now, villeneuve
