http://www.chateau-aujac.org/https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ch%C3%A2teau-du-Cheylard-dAujac/263509297119988Symbol of the double power of the Bishop of Uzès and the Anduze family, the Cheylard of Aujac was built in the twelfth century in the centre of the upper valley of the Cèze in the Cevennes, on a spur near Mont Lozère. Perched at 600 metres a.s.l, at the crossroads of the departments of Gard, Lozère and Ardèche, it is the last intact fortification of a series of castles, on a route which has existed since the Middle Age and which was first mentioned in 1270 under the name of Val Cezarencha.
From the square tower to the round tower, the castle illustrates the architectural evolution from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Under the protection of its walls, a fortified medieval village was built, with a farm, a dovecote, a sheepfold, a “clède” and a chapel. Now renovated, this hamlet of the Cheylard is used today as a means of continuing the life of the castle.
Residence of craftsmen, it is the setting of ongoing activities in summer, with an audiovisual room, a medieval shop and exhibitions.
Registered as a historical monument, the simultaneous renovation of the castle and its village ensures the consistency of this magnificent architectural structure, a rare example of conservation. Inhabited since the Middle Ages, it is the object of scientific researches and restoration.
the site boasts a multilingual reception, an autonomous outdoor tour, a guided interior visit, workshops for schools: parchment, shields, storyteller, blacksmith, etc..
Free parking at the bottom of the site, and parking for the handicapped at the gates of the castle.
